Detailed 6-Day Machame Route Itinerary
Day 1: Machame Gate → Machame Camp (3,010m)
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours | Distance: ~11 km
Vegetation Zone: Montane Rainforest
Your trek begins at Machame Gate, following registration and briefing. The trail leads through dense rainforest with towering trees, moss-covered trunks, and frequent wildlife sightings such as colobus and blue monkeys.
The path ascends gradually before steepening near the end, bringing you to Machame Camp, located just above the forest line.
Overnight at Machame Camp.

Day 2: Machame Camp → Shira Camp (3,840m)
Trekking Time: 4–6 hours | Distance: ~5 km
Vegetation Zone: Moorland
You leave the rainforest and climb steep ridges into open moorland. Vegetation thins as giant heathers and volcanic rock formations dominate the landscape.
Cross the vast Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic areas, with panoramic views of Mount Meru and Kibo Peak.
Overnight at Shira Camp.
Day 3: Shira Camp → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp (3,976m)
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours | Distance: ~10 km
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
This is a key acclimatization day. You trek gradually upward to Lava Tower, where lunch is served at high altitude. Many trekkers feel the altitude here, making this stop essential for adaptation.
After lunch, descend into the dramatic Barranco Valley, filled with giant senecios and dramatic cliff faces.
Overnight at Barranco Camp, one of the most scenic camps on Kilimanjaro.

Day 4: Barranco Camp → Barranco Wall → Karanga Camp (3,995m)
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours | Distance: ~5 km
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
Begin the day with the exciting climb up the Barranco Wall — a fun, non-technical scramble offering some of the best views on the mountain.
After reaching the top, the trail undulates across ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp, an important acclimatization stop before summit day.
Overnight at Karanga Camp.
Day 5: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (4,673m)
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours | Distance: ~4 km
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
A short but challenging trek takes you to Barafu Camp, your summit base. The terrain becomes cold, rocky, and wind-swept.
Arrive early to rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear. After an early dinner, you sleep for a few hours before the summit attempt, which begins around midnight.
Overnight at Barafu Camp.

Day 6: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Gate
Trekking Time: 10–14 hours | Distance: ~17 km
Vegetation Zones: Arctic → Alpine Desert → Rainforest
Summit Night
Your climb begins in darkness under a sky full of stars. Step by step, you ascend steep switchbacks to Stella Point (5,756m), reaching the crater rim at sunrise.
A final, gentle walk along the rim brings you to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement and take in breathtaking views of glaciers and endless plains.
Descent
After the summit, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Gate, passing through changing landscapes back into lush rainforest.
Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Moshi.
