Detailed 7-Day Machame Route Itinerary
Day 1: Machame Gate (1,640m) → Machame Camp (3,010m)
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours
Vegetation Zone: Rainforest
Begin your climb at Machame Gate with park registration and a briefing. Enter the lush rainforest, climbing steadily through towering trees and mossy trails. Watch for wildlife like colobus monkeys and colorful birds. Overnight at Machame Camp above the forest line.

Day 2: Machame Camp → Shira Camp (3,840m)
Trekking Time: 4–6 hours
Vegetation Zone: Moorland
Ascend through thick forest to the open Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic locations. Giant heathers, volcanic rocks, and panoramic views of Mount Meru and Kibo Peak make this a perfect spot for photography. Overnight at Shira Camp.
Day 3: Shira Camp → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Shira Camp (3,840m)
Trekking Time: 6–8 hours
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
This is an acclimatization day. Trek gradually up to Lava Tower, where the high altitude allows your body to adjust. After lunch, descend back to Shira Camp for rest. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy reduces altitude sickness risk and increases summit success.
Day 4: Shira Camp → Barranco Camp (3,976m)
Trekking Time: 5–7 hours
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
Climb over rocky ridges into the Barranco Valley, passing giant senecio plants and dramatic cliffs. Barranco Camp is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic camps, ideal for photography and early rest.

Day 5: Barranco Camp → Barranco Wall → Karanga Camp (3,995m)
Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
Scramble up the famous Barranco Wall, a highlight for adventurous trekkers. Afterward, continue along ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp for acclimatization and preparation for the summit push.
Day 6: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (4,673m)
Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
A short but steep hike leads to Barafu Camp, the base for the summit attempt. Early dinner and rest are followed by a midnight summit push, giving your body enough energy and preparation time.
Day 7: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Gate
Trekking Time: 10–14 hours
Vegetation Zones: Arctic → Alpine Desert → Rainforest
Summit night begins around midnight. Reach Stella Point for sunrise views, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, descend via Mweka Route, through alpine desert to rainforest, ending at the park gate for your summit certificate and transfer.
