6-Day Machame Route Itinerary

Day 1: Machame Gate (1,640m) → Machame Camp (2,835m)

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Machame Gate. Trek through dense rainforest filled with wildlife, giant ferns, and moss-covered trees. Arrive at Machame Camp as the climate shifts into cooler mountain air.

Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Day 2: Machame Camp → Shira Camp (3,750m)

The trail climbs steeply out of the forest into the open moorland. As the vegetation thins, stunning views of Shira Ridge and Kibo Cone appear.

Hiking Time: 4–6 hours

Day 3: Shira Camp → Lava Tower (4,630m) → Barranco Camp (3,976m)

A vital acclimatization day. Hike up to the Lava Tower, then descend to Barranco Camp following the “climb high, sleep low” principle to help your body adjust to the altitude.

Day 4: Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp (3,995m)

Start with the thrilling ascent of the Barranco Wall, a memorable scramble with breathtaking views. Trek through valleys and ridges to Karanga Camp.

Day 5: Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp (4,673m)
