6 Days Marangu Route Itinerary (Budget Group)

Day 1: Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

Begin your trek after registration at Marangu Gate. Walk through lush rainforest filled with birds and colobus monkeys before reaching Mandara Hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

Climb gradually into the moorland zone. Enjoy clear views of Mawenzi Peak and open landscapes before arriving at Horombo Hut.

Hiking: 5–6 hours | Distance: ~12 km

Day 3: Horombo Hut – Acclimatization Day

Spend the day acclimatizing with a hike toward Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Ridge, then return to Horombo Hut. This extra day greatly increases summit success.

A steady ascent across the alpine desert. The terrain becomes barren and dramatic as you approach Kibo Hut, your base before summit night.

Start the summit push at midnight. Reach Gilman’s Point, continue to Uhuru Peak, then descend carefully back to Horombo Hut.
